How long should my manuscript word count be? How long does it take to write a book?
These questions are wide open for interpretation. I think the shortest amount of time it took me to write a novel was nine months and the longest was two and a half years.
The length all depends on the time you have. The most important thing to remember is to write a little every day, which includes blogs, journals, and research. Don’t feel rushed in this process. It takes many months or years to complete a novel. If you want to write a book but never have the time, consider hiring a ghost writer to help complete it. This is a good strategy if you have never written a book or if it’s hard to talk about your life.
Remember, once you are done with a book, put it away for awhile. Remember your book doesn’t need to be a set length either. I try not to focus on that word count at the bottom of the page. Literature has both award winning novellas and epic novels. I’ve listed the average manuscript word count as:
1,000 – 6,000: short story
6,000 – 15,000: novelette
15,000 – 45,000: novella
45,000 – 120,000: novel
120,000 – Larger: Epic (Usually if the manuscript word count is this large, it’s broken into a series of books.)
